COA Offers Temporary Meal Assistance for Cass County Seniors Impacted by SNAP Delays
The Cass County COA understands that many local seniors are feeling the effects of the current government shutdown and the resulting delays or interruptions in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. To help during this challenging time, the COA is offering temporary meal assistance to qualifying Cass County residents.
Helping Seniors When It Matters Most
Cass County seniors age 60 and older who currently receive SNAP benefits and are experiencing a delay or loss of benefits are eligible to receive:
- One free frozen dinner meal per day
- Monday through Friday
- 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
These frozen meals will be distributed at COA congregate meal locations during lunchtime hours, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Eligible seniors who join us for lunch during that time may request to take home one frozen meal per day.
In addition, current homebound Meals on Wheels clients who qualify may also be eligible to receive these frozen meals as part of this temporary assistance effort.
A Lifeline During the Shutdown
This short-term program is designed to ensure that Cass County’s older adults do not go without access to healthy, nutritious food while federal benefit programs are delayed. For many seniors, even a brief interruption in SNAP assistance can have a significant impact on their daily meals.
Continuing Our Commitment to Senior Nutrition
The COA’s nutrition programs, including Meals on Wheels and congregate dining, are vital lifelines for many Cass County residents. In 2024, the COA prepared and served over 65,000 meals to local seniors, ensuring access to balanced, healthy food across the county.
This new temporary assistance program reflects the COA’s ongoing commitment to supporting Cass County’s older adults — especially in times of uncertainty.
How to Participate
Eligible seniors can visit COA congregate meal locations during regular lunch hours (11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.) to request a frozen meal. Meals will be distributed one per day per qualifying individual while the program remains active.
