Summer is finally here, and it’s time to have some fun in the sun! To make sure we stay safe and healthy this summer, here are some practical safety tips to keep in mind.

Keep Hydrated

Drink even if not thirsty. By the time you start to feel thirsty, you are already mildly dehydrated. When in the heat, minimize alcohol and caffeine consumption because these substances only further dehydrate your body.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

When going outside wear SPF 15 or higher. Be sure the sunscreen blocks UVA and UVB rays. Be sure to reapply sunscreen after water activities or if perspiring. Hats also provide protection from the sun and remember to protect your eyes as well by wearing sunglasses labeled for UVA/UVB rays.

Dress for the Weather

Wear light-colored and loose fitting clothing. Fabrics made with natural fibers such as cotton will help keep you cooler as opposed to synthetic materials.

Avoid the Heat if Possible

The sun is strongest between 10am and 4pm. If you must be outdoors during a heat wave, try to avoid this time frame. Instead schedule outdoor activities earlier in the morning or in the evening when the sun isn’t as intense.

Watch For Heat Stroke

Heatstroke can sneak up on you, so it’s important to know the symptoms. Symptoms include confusion, disorientation, dry skin, excessive tiredness, headache, lethargy, nausea, and rapid pulse. It’s important to seek medical attention immediately if heatstroke is suspected.

Review Medications

Some prescription medications are known to cause side effects such as increased sensitivity to ultraviolet rays, so it’s important to review medications. Be sure to speak with your doctor or a pharmacist if you have any concerns.
