The Meals on Wheels program has an immediate need for volunteer drivers. Each weekday we have routes throughout the county where we deliver a hot, nutritious meal to homebound seniors. For many of these people, the interaction with the volunteer is the only contact they may have each day. The demand is growing, so more drivers are needed.
All routes begin each morning at the Lowe Center in Cassopolis. Staff from the Nutrition Department prepare and package the meals, then review the routes with the drivers before they depart around 10:30 a.m. Most routes cover about 50 miles and are completed within 90 minutes. Volunteer drivers can then enjoy that day’s hot meal or one of the other options in the café. Drivers are also reimbursed for their mileage at the current government approved rate.
So if you enjoy driving and would like to bring a smile to someone’s face, along with their lunch, consider becoming a volunteer driver for the Meals on Wheels program. You can call Mark or Leslie at 269-445-8110 or stop by the HR office to learn more.
